AusCERT2012 Presentation

Battling the Empire While Stuck in Cloud City (Managing Security in a Cloudy, Mobile World)

Whether you like it or not, your users have made the lightspeed jump to Bespin - otherwise known as Cloud City... and the Empire is waiting to pounce.

Between mobile devices, cloud services, and social networks, our data is flying past out of our traditional network perimeters faster than the Millenium Falcon can make the hyperdrive jump to point five past lightspeed. Trends like Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and IT self-service aren't necessarily bad, but they do require that we monitor and secure our data in new and more aggressive ways. While cloud networks aren't entirely different than our own, they rely heavily on virtualization and Web 2.0 applications. These complex technologies present new security implications that most organizations are still learning to deal with.

In this fast paced presentation, Corey Nachreiner, CISSP and Director of Security Strategy for WatchGuard will talk about some of the security challenges posed by the fast adoption of personal mobile devices and cloud services by our modern, well-connected workforce. You'll learn some of the risks associated with badly implemented virtual environments, poorly coded Web 2.0 applications, and Trojan-infected mobile app stores. More importantly, Nachreiner will share tips on how you can still leverage these new technological trends without losing an arm and best friend in the process. Rather than rushing off to Bespin unprepared, join us for a little more training at AusCERT and become a security Jedi Master.
